Biography

Litigation attorney graduated from the University of Costa Rica (1986).

Gerardo Parajeles, PhD has been a passionate and renowned law scholar since the beginning of his professional practice. His dedication to this noble social task has covered all areas of Law to which a professional could aspire, with thirty years of service in the Judiciary as a Civil Judge, twenty eight years as University Professor, author of various legal publications, and has been a prominent contributor to high-profile legal reforms in Costa Rica such as the new Code of Civil Procedures.

Dr. Parajeles is listed as one of the leading lawyer’s educators in Costa Rica and after his retirement from the judiciary, he began his private practice at NCC Parajeles with great enthusiasm and leadership, always serving his clients and a number of lawyers from all over the country that constantly contract his services on complex civil and commercial litigation matters.

He is the director and leader of the firm’s Department of Civil and Commercial Litigation. He is also the educator for our firm’s entire team of lawyers and students.

During 30 years of service within the Judiciary of Costa Rica, he held several positions in civil courts. He served as Judge of District Civil Court, Judge of Appeals and as Deputy Magistrate for the First Civil Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice. In that role, his main duties were ruling on civil processes, collection processes, probate, injunctions, evictions, executions of judgments and other civil claims. (1982-2012).

As a university professor, he has been a major asset to the Escuela Libre de Derecho University’s advanced bachelor’s degree program in Law, and has taught courses in General Process Theory, Law of Obligations, Civil Procedural Law and Inheritance Law. In addition, he is part of the Doctoral Program and trains Judges in graduate studies on Administration of Justice in Civil Matters, where he covers topics such as procedural abuse, means of challenging procedural acts, general theory of evidence and the impact of collections processes (1988 – present).

As an educator of trial attorneys and judicial officials, one of his favorite activities is to interact with colleagues in continuing education courses and workshops, comment, in order to discuss and delve into topics relevant to Costa Rican law and the international legal community. For Dr. Parajeles, this is of paramount importance to advance in one´s personal and professional development. He has trained legal professionals for the Costa Rican Bar Association, Cartularium and the International Center for Studies. (1990 – present).

As author of Costa Rican legal publications and laws, Dr. Parajeles has been recognized for his multiple publications on civil and commercial law issues. Some of these publications include: The Basic Proceedings of the Civil Process, Civil Procedural Law Course Volumes I and II, Topics of Civil Procedural Law, Prescription in the Collections Processes, Orality and the Modern Bolivian Civil Process, Evidence in Civil Matters, Auction in Costa Rican Case Law, Procedural Abuse, Guide to the Application of the Civil Procedure Code, Civil Code and Civil Procedural Code.

Since his professional incorporation, he has had participated as editor of legal reforms of vital importance for Costa Rican and has created bills of new laws such as the Law for Judicial Notification and the Judicial Collections Act, among others. He recently participated as a member of the Drafting Committee of the New Code of Civil Procedures that went into effect in October 2018, for which he has been awarded by the Costa Rican Bar Association and the Supreme Court of Justice for his outstanding participation and valuable contribution to the country.

As a partner of the law firm Hulbert Volio, Parajeles, he led the Litigation Department as a specialist in Civil and Commercial Law. He devoted himself to personalized advising in complex civil lawsuits in areas such as collections, probate, evictions, judgment executions, property rights, obligations and commercial law. (2013-2017)

Together with María José Parajeles Blandon, they founded the Parajeles Law Firm, which in 2018 merged with NCC Abogados, today known as NCC Parajeles, with litigation as one of its main areas of practice. Dr. Parajeles directs the highly specialized civil and commercial processes for the firm.
